Also feel the crab’s shell by squeezing it between thumb and forefingers at the widest points of the shell. Female crabs are brown in colour and have a rounded flap underneath. 9 Don’t submerge the crab for too long or else they’ll get too cold. Stir the crabs in the water for 30 seconds before taking them out. Remove the crabs from the water with your tongs and set them in a bowl filled with ice water. Before keeping a crab check to see whether it is male or female. Dip the cooked crab into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Better to put them back and take a feed of good size crabs instead. A crab of this size while legal is so small it is not worth bothering with. The legal size on Blue Swimmer crabs is 6cm from front of shell to the back. Place the crab on a flat surface (or a chopping board), and cut along the middle using a heavy knife (like a cleaver). I sit them upside down to drain then its off to the fridge to keep the beer company until they are chilled. I then rinse under cold water briefly and remove the mouth parts and gills. I then clean the crabs by lifting the flap underneath them and removing the top shell. I leave them in cold water for about ten minutes. The heat retained in the shell will continue to cook the meat if this is not done it is IMPORTANT. I take them from the pot and drop them in the sink which is filled with COLD water. They start floating when nearly cooked so this is a good indicator. Lay crab on its back and use the knife to take away the apron/abdomen from the crab. Follow these steps to wash the live crab. Once you’ve sedated your crab, you need a knife (or some type of shucking tool), flowing water, a place to put the clean crabs and a huge trash bin. When the water has started boiling again I cook them for 4 minutes for normal crabs and 5 for big ones. Method 2 Separating the Crab from Its Top Carapace. I bring the water to the boil then drop in a couple crabs and place a lid on to speed it up coming back to the boil. I cook my crabs in fresh water in a large pot and to the water I had approx 2 tablespoons of salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Once your crab is clean, you can cook it as is or cut it into quarters so it’s easier to eat.

As long as your crab is terminated that’s all that matters. To thoroughly clean a blue crab, you’ll need to remove its shell (after it’s been humanely killed) and clear out everything but the meat. After this I kill them by putting them in the freezer for 30 mins. Blue crabs have an apron that covers their abdomen. They have three pairs of walking legs and rear swimming legs that look like paddles. Blue crab claws are bright blue, and mature females have red tips on their claws too.
